ABSTRACT This article aims to highlight the environmental and social importance of the Tijuca National Park for the city of Rio de Janeiro, because of its recreational use and existence values, given indirectly by “occasional” and “frequent” visitors to this natural area through the willingness to pay (WTP) to visit this conservation unit and enjoy its recreational and ecotourism attractions, and the willingness to donate (WTD) an annual amount to maintain the facilities and attractions of the park. To perform this research we used the Contingent Valuation Method, being applied 228 questionnaires to the “occasional” and “frequent” visitors, residents of Rio de Janeiro, that use, mainly, the Tijuca Forest, as a leisure area to practice ludic, sports, entertainment and relaxation and contemplation activities. The results showed, mainly, that the WTP to visit would be directly related to the possibility of a behavior change in daily urban life after a visit to the Forest. Key words: Contingent Valuation.
