The German Geopolitics in the Republic of Weimar: the advent of Journal of Geopolitics in Germany

Abstract

This article discusses the advent of Journal of Geopolitics, in 1924, in the eclectic universe of ideas and tendencies in the crisis of the science of the beginning of the 20th Century. The basic axis of this argument stand on the critics made by the group of geopolítico of the Zeitschrift für Geopolitik (ZfG) – Journal of Geopolitics - to the "academic traditionalism of Geography in Germany". Those critics were based on the modernization idea and breaking off with the scientific rationality, typical of intellectual atmosphere of the Republic of Weimar, marked by the Lebensphilosophie. Besides the discussion of some aspects of that modernization, exemplified by the Geopolitics Cartography, the article brings a characterization of the formal aspects of the journal: circulation, target public, themes, among others.
