The severance and the problems of accessibility: The Tietê bypass as an obstacle to the downtown area of São Paulo city

Abstract

This research seeks to understand the problems of accessibility caused by the severance and the use of vehicles as a factor of immobility in big urban cities. We have tried to comprehend the organization and the production of the space in the central area of São Paulo city and the flow of vehicles which leave the North part heading downtown. There was the need to restructure the information on the traffic; number of north-south subway users and the amount of pedestrians who move around the Cruzeiro do Sul and the Bandeiras bridges. We also seek to research the buses routes and the structure of sidewalks and the use of bikes which cross such bridges. Keywords: Severance, Accessibility and Tietê bypass.
