ABSTRACT The concept of sustainability has been widely discussed in recent decades, and different positions have been consolidated over the years and it is important to mention the production of alternatives for sustainability at the local level. The environmental issue in this perspective becomes part of the discussions about social learning, quality of life, democratic management and the construction of citizenship. This study analyzes the perceptions, interests and values of various social actors related to the use of the space and its effects on the social and environmental reality of the Atibaia River Watershed inserted in the Cantareira System Environmental Protected Area. Furthermore, cartographic studies of land use maps are presented and analyzed in search to characterize the current environmental conservation of this region. This research also seeks to point out proposals for a sustainable management that contribute to the implementation of a participatory environmental planning and to the regulation of this conservation unit.
