Abstract

The Flemming ternary diagram is a revised textural classification of muddy marine sediments on the basis of hydrodynamic criteria. Its application to the study of Quaternary sediments in valley head areas was envisaged in order to improve paleohydrologic interpretation of continental deposits. The results allow distinction between roughly organized sediments and well-organized ones. As well, it is possible to distinguish sediments and paleosoils. The faciologic analysis of valley head area deposits is enabled through the definition of proximal and distal facies.
