Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of low back pain in coffee’s bag carriers of a processing and exportation coffee factory situated in Ouro Fino/MG city. Twelve workers were individually submitted to the application of the following instruments of evaluation: (1) subjective scale of pain, used to identify the intensity of pain perceived for the worker; (2) the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire to evaluate functionally the lumbar spine; and (3) the Oswestry Disability Questionnaire used effectively to investigate the presence of low back pain. As result, it was observed that clinical detectable pain in the lumbar column occurred at 50% of the workers and that 75% of the studied population presented functional limitation in the daily activities. It is concluded that the low back pain has great incidence in these workers and that beyond general measures of ergonomic prevention, specific instruments of evaluation of the lumbar column, constitute essential tools in the control of this occupational illness.
