Abstract

Aim: To compare measures of the sedentary behavior patterns in non-active [(n=23) <300 minutes of moderate and vigorous physical activity] and active [(n=21) >300 minutes) people with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder. Methods: With a cross-sectional design, we assessed sedentary behavior patterns (pattern of breaks, sedentary episodes, and sedentary episodes longer than 30 minutes) during seven consecutive days using an accelerometer. The inclusion criteria: a) people with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder by the psychiatry and confirmation by psychiatric interview; b) Adults (18-60 years old); c) without physical disability; d) ActiGraph® measured the SB patterns. Depressive symptoms were measured by MADRS and manic symptoms by YMRS. Results: Our results showed the patterns of SB were different considerer breaks variables: Total time of breaks [non-active=3114 (2525-3608) vs active=4263 (3756-5379) p<0.001]; Average duration of breaks [non-active=7 (5-10) vs active=11 (7-14) p=0.006)]; Average daily time of breaks [non-active=515 (393-706) vs active = 648 (597-859) p=0.001]. Conclusion: non-active and active people diagnosed with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, differ from sedentary behavior patterns.
