ABSTRACT Cetacean watching tourism in natural environment grows worldwide each year. It is also done in Cananéia region, south coast of São Paulo State (SP), where the estuarine dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) can be seen all year. In order to deepen the scientific research on the tourists’s knowledge about these animals, semi-structured interviews were performed in the summer seasons of 2005 and 2006. A total of 206 people aged between 04 and 82 were interviewed, of which little more than half (50.48%) were visiting Cananéia for the first time and 17.96% affirmed to be completely unaware of the estuarine dolphin. The majority of those who were interviewed agreed that these animals are important and considered that both the region and the dolphins are preserved, but these visitors also demonstrated to be aware that the dolphins may suffer some threats. The demand for information and the qualification of the local community and visitors were well evidenced in the interviews. Thus, there is a necessity of a continuous environmental awareness because this measure can help in the administration of the Environmental Protected Area of Cananéia, by outlining more effective and realistic conservation actions for both the region and the estuarine dolphin. Key words: Touristic Activity. Environmental Awareness. Conservation Actions. Estuarine Dolphin (Sotalia guianensis). Cananéia. Environmental Protected Area.Downloads
