Evaluation of ecosystem services and payment for environmental services:
application in the Córrego Bebedouro river basin, Mato Grosso do Sul - Brazil
Abstract
The Bebedouro Stream Watershed (BHCB in Portuguese) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) faces significant challenges due to the loss of native vegetation and the consequent reduction in ecosystem services. Payment for Environmental Services (PES) could be a promising opportunity to mitigate these issues, encouraging conservation and environmental recovery. This study aimed to evaluate carbon stock and sequestration ecosystem services and simulate PES in the BHCB. The methodology included the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) valuation application, and PES simulation under the Mina D'água Program in the area. The results provided carbon sequestration estimates over 12 and 30 years: riverbanks (29,633.89 tC and 74,084.711 tC), Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA) (1,241.58 tC and 3,103.95 tC), and Legal Reserves (LR) (95,918.40 tC and 239,795.980 tC), represents the highest estimate in the context of vegetation restoration. The PES simulation identified the presence of 66 springs on 25 rural properties, with a total annual value of R$ 21,336.48 for their preservation and a total restoration area of 1,576 meters. It is recommended to encourage reforestation in proposed LR areas, in the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR in Portuguese/MS).
