This article explores the idea of a geography based on ontological–existential foundations by engaging in a dialogue between Heidegger’s philosophy and the discipline of geography, with particular focus on critically examining a Marxist-Lefebvrian metageography. The text is divided into two parts. The first extends the concept of an ontological–existential geography, aligned with Heidegger, by including a key element of his philosophy: the critique of metaphysics, particularly the metaphysical foundations that underpin modern sciences. The second part presents a critical and constructive evaluation of how this metaphysical content is presented within a specific theoretical and methodological approach currently prevalent in the field of metageography. Methodologically, the study combines (i) a review of existing literature, as a structural component, with (ii) a focused extraction of the main features of metageography and Heidegger’s project, limiting the analysis to elements directly relevant to the article’s objectives.
