Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze hydrological trends in the São Paulo portion of the Paraíba do Sul River Basin using rainfall and river level data, and to relate these elevation changes to land use and land cover changes between 1985 and 2020. According to Marengo and Alves (2005), rainfall trends in the Paraíba do Sul River Basin have not changed significantly; however, the flow of the main river segment is decreasing. They suggest that changes in land use and occupation, along with urban growth within the basin, are possible causes. Knowledge gaps remain regarding flow variations in the tributary sub-basins of the main segment, as well as the influence of land use and land cover changes on these variations. Using data from HIDROWEB and MAPBIOMAS, this study contributes to a better understanding of the relationships between precipitation, river level, and land use and land cover. Over the past 60 years, in sub-basins outside the main riverbed, precipitation has shown no significant trend of change. However, river flows have exhibited both positive and negative variations, indicating that there is not always a direct correlation with land use and land cover. One case was identified in which two sub-basins, despite showing a similar absolute increase in forest cover, displayed distinct flow trends.

I am currently the director of the Laboratory of the Studies of Social-Ecological Landscapes (LESP) within the Urban and Regional Planning Department of the University of the Paraíba Valley. i am also an associated researcher of the Center for the Assessment of Social-Ecological Landscapes (CASEL) at Indiana University. My research interests include how local populations adapt their resource use and management strategies in response to global changes (e.g., markets, land tenure regularization, climate change) and how these are expressed in their landscapes and well-being.
