Dominat and exception landscapes:

a proposal for a landscape nuclearity index (LNI) to identify enclaves and redoubts

Abstract

Based on the premise of spatial interactivity between dominant landscapes and enclaves, this article aims to present a Landscape Nuclearity Index (LNI), obtained by the association of different variables, whose interaction differentiates the nuclear landscapes of exception enclaves. The proposal used as its empirical basis the Salto river basin (Southeastern Brazil), characterized by a sharp altimetric amplitude that leads to a geosystem distribution in altitudinal zonation. The results indicate the enclaves emerge in the main regional hills, where weather and edaphic conditions restrict the regionally dominating forest ecosystems. The differentiation among nuclear and exception landscapes is also supported by the distribution of geosystems, with enclave being more connected to azonal geosystems, and nuclear areas to geosystems controlled by climate zonation. Also, the index’s cartography adheres to the functional landscape compartmentation, showing the connectivity between upper montane enclaves and dominant intermontane landscapes.
