From green to gray? The story of vegetation cover in Corumbá IV told by NDVI

The Cerrado vegetation plays a fundamental role in conserving water resources and contributing to increased biodiversity in forested areas. For the conservation of natural resources, studies are needed to spatially demonstrate the evolution and distribution of vegetation. This article focuses on identifying changes in vegetation cover in the vicinity of Lake Corumbá IV, resulting from human activities in the landscape, and monitored using satellite imagery and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The study area encompassed a 1,200-meter buffer zone from the shores of Lake Corumbá IV, using Landsat 5 images for the years 2002, 2006, and 2011, and Landsat 8 images for 2016 and 2022. The results indicate fragmentation and reduction of Cerrado areas across different periods, highlighting a pattern of environmental degradation in the studied landscape.
